3 List Building Mistakes To Avoid

This lesson is about helping you avoid the pitfalls that marketers make when building their list. Every marketer who has started list building has made such mistakes, and with this chapter, you will not have to make the same errors as they have so you can speed up your list building process!

Mistake #1 – Buying leads before setting up a proper autoresponder email series.

Mistake #4 – Making too many ad swaps.

Ad swaps might be a good way to build your list, but you must remember each time that you promote another person’s product; you are literally giving away your potential customers to your competitors. This can draw their attention away from the value you have to offer and thus the quality of your list may suffer.

In short, do your best to avoid these mistakes and always adopt good list building practices to ensure maximal quality and quantity of subscribers.

It is therefore important that you nurture and treat your list well. doesn’t happen in an instant. Effective Email Marketing

Email marketing is quickly becoming one of the most popular forms of Internet advertising. This is because there are many distinct advantages to the concept of email marketing. However, email marketing does have some disadvantages as well. In this article we will examine the advantages and disadvantages of email marketing and will also provide some insight into how to plan and execute an effective email marketing campaign.

Email marketing certainly has a set of unique advantages over other types of marketing both online and offline. Perhaps one of the most significant advantages to email marketing is the ability to reach a worldwide audience with minimal effort. It is certainly possible to reach a worldwide audience with other types of advertising but traditional types of advertising such as television, radio and the print media are not nearly as effective for reaching potential customers around the world all at once.

Another major advantage to email marketing is it is extremely affordable. This is significant because there are many other types of marketing, including Internet marketing, which are significantly more expensive than email marketing. The costs associated with email marketing are minimal. Ideally you will already have a list of email recipients who are interested in your products and services so there is no cost associated with obtaining a list of email addresses. Additionally, the cost to send out emails is minimal and can be considered part of your regular operating costs. All of these factors already make email marketing extremely cost effective.

However, there is some cost involved in email marketing. Primarily this is the costs associated with writing the advertisements and creating any graphics which will accompany the email advertisements. This will require hiring a writer to write the copy for the advertisement and a designer to create and implements the graphics. The cost of these services will vary pretty widely but in general you will pay more for writers and designers with more experience. This is because these writers and designers are expected to be able to produce a higher quality of work than those with less experience could produce.

The most obvious disadvantage to email marketing is the possibility of having your email marketing viewed as spam. This is a very important problem because it could prove to be quite costly in terms of the profit margin for your business. Each day Internet users are bombarded with unsolicited emails serving as advertisements. This problem has reached epic proportions and the abundance of spam infiltrating the email boxes of innocent Internet users has to be cautious and suspicious about any email they receive which is unsolicited and appears to be promoting a particular product or service.

Emails which contain subject lines or content which appear to be similar to spam may be automatically transferred to a spam email folder by the email system. Emails which are not automatically deleted may be deleted without being opened simply because the recipient does not recognize the sender of the email. Both of these problems can result in essentially wasted time for the business owner because the recipients are not even viewing the emails advertising the products and services offered by the business. Additionally, they may result in complaints being lodged against the company for being a purveyor of spam.

Now that you understand the advantages and disadvantages of email marketing, you might wonder how you can maximize the advantages to use email marketing to your advantage. The most important factor to consider is your email distribution list. This should consist of former customers who have expressed a desire to receive emails with information and advertisements as well as potential customers who have also expressed interest in more information.

The content of the emails should also be carefully considered. They should certainly highlight the products and services you offer but should do so without appearing to be a hard sales pitch. A writer with experience in writing this type of copy should be able to assist you in providing insightful and accurate copy which also entices the reader to find out more about your products and services. Finally your emails should provide the readers with a call to action. This should be a statement urging the reader to take a specific action such as making a purchase or researching a product.

Building Customer Relationships That Last

One of the ways a business builds its brand is to tug at the emotions of their audience. The way a customer and client work together and communicate can build long-lasting, meaningful relationships that turn clients into fans, and fans into clients. You can actually set out to build these relationships by using emotional marketing techniques.

1. Show Them That You Know Them

The more research you do into the needs and desires of your target audience, the more your audience will be able to tell that you’re interested in them. When you show interest in them, it will make them interested in your business and you. When you discover something about your audience, let them know through your content and your actions.

2. Treat Them Right

So many times business owners have sales and special events to get new clients. What about the clients you already have? Keeping them is far more important than getting a new client, and less costly too. Do something special for your existing client base or fan base that shows them that you care about them. Give them a discount, or a special freebie, or something else that attaches them to you in a special way.

3. Be Transparent and Honest

One way to endear yourself to your audience is to always be transparent and honest. If you make a mistake, own up to it. If you change your views on something, it’s okay to admit it. Doing so will endear you to your audience and make you appear so much more trustworthy to them.

4. Put People before Numbers

While you do things to help promote your business, it’s important to keep your morals and remember that people are more important than numbers. If you put people first in your business, including yourself, you’ll find that you naturally improve your bottom line. The more people trust you, the more they’ll buy from you.

5. Be Fun When Appropriate

No one wants to feel as if they’re communicating with a robot or someone who is not real. Be funny when it’s appropriate so that you can show your humanity. Your humanness will shine through when you add some humor and fun to posts, emails, and even sales pages.

6. Be Responsive

Your customers expect to get an answer when they have a problem, and they expect it to be quickly. Provide many different ways for your audience to contact you. Explain to your audience at each method how long they can expect to wait for a response. Then follow up and do what you said you’d do.

7. Engage with Your Audience

Find ways to engage with your audience. Ask for their advice or ideas when it comes to a new product or service you’re going to launch. They can help name it, help define what should be in it, and even how much you should charge for it. Your audience can also be your best source of word-of-mouth marketing.

8. Consider the Communication Format

Also, it’s important to try to get an understanding of how people communicate within their environment. Communication online in chat, instant message, Twitter, or a blog, is far different from communicating on the telephone or in person. Even email is different from other methods of communication. It’s imperative that you determine what is different and then make up for that with the type of communication they’re using.

Building customer relationships that last is part of the goal of emotional marketing. When you’ve formed an attachment with the consumer, they will stick with you for years - through price increases, trials and tribulations, and more. You can’t go wrong with building relationships.

What Not To Do With Your Leads

Anyone that works in sales knows just how important it is to have lead sources to keep your pipeline filled. But it is not only how we obtain the leads that is important, it’s what we do with them once we get them.

One of the most critical mistakes a salesperson can make once they receive a lead, is not acting on it immediately. I once worked with a guy who belonged to a networking group, the sole purpose of his joining this group was to receive leads. This group wasn’t cheap either, it cost him $500.00 annually to be a member. He would come back from his weekly meeting with a lead in his hand and pin it to the bulletin board above his desk, and there it would stay until he noticed it a few days later.

In sales, and it does not matter what you are selling, every day is critical! At any moment, your competitor can call your customer and walk away with the business.

Another common mistake I have witnessed countless times, is contacting the lead in a timely fashion, but having absolutely no enthusiasm once you contact the customer. When you call a potential customer, smile as you speak to them, the customer will pick up on the inflection in your voice and respond to it. Don’t act as though the customer is a burden to you, and that you are doing them a favor. Remember, you are the expert when it comes to your product, don’t expect your customer to know everything, if they did, they wouldn’t need you. So make sure they know that you are happy to help them.

Another no-no when following up on a lead is to yawn, sneeze, or cough into the phone. I understand that these are normal and common bodily functions, but there is no excuse for doing it directly into the receiver, this is a great way to lose the sale, the yawn alone will most likely make the customer hang up the phone. Always put yourself in the shoes of the customer. Imagine meeting someone for the first time over the telephone and your conversation is being interrupted by yawns, and sneezes, I doubt you would be gung-ho about doing business with them

Following up with a lead and then putting that person on hold is another common mistake I have come across. Although your reasons for putting your customer on hold may seem very important to you, your customer will find it to be annoying regardless of your reasons. So be sure to set aside a time to call your lead when you know the interruptions will be few.

So the next time you receive a lead, act on it immediately, let your customer know that you are happy to work with them, speak clearly and avoid interruptions, and watch your sales productivity increase!

5 Powerful List Building Tips For Growing Your Business

By Gary Pettit

One of the best ways to grow your internet business is to build a mailing list that you can email to again and again with special offers for products and important news about your business. There is a saying, "the money is in the list." Truer words were never spoken. Your list can be an absolute goldmine if you build it correctly and cultivate a relationship with your readership. Here are some important list building tips to help you get started.

1. Offer a valuable free gift in exchange for the individual's email address.

The best way to entice people to join your list is to offer something that is valuable to them, such as a free report, video or webinar. The free gift should be on a topic that is related to your business or the products you offer for sale so that you build a targeted list. The opt-in rate for a list is much higher when a freebie is offered, so it is worth the time to either create or buy a valuable free gift to offer to visitors to join your list.

2. Make sure your opt-in boxes for joining your list are in highly visible places on your website. You can install a plugin that will activate a pop-up window when people visit your site with an offer for joining your list. Other good places for an opt-in box include right below the header and in the sidebar of your website.

3. One of the most important list building tips is to drive targeted traffic to your opt-in forms. You want people on your list who will be interested in buying what you have to offer. You actually don't want just anyone on the list to inflate the numbers. The best way to do this is to advertise your list in places where interested buyers congregate online.

You can write articles related to your products and post them on article directories or guest posts on websites. If people are interested in your article and want more information, they will click on the link over to your site where your opt-in form is.

Another great way to drive targeted traffic to your opt-in form is to buy inexpensive Facebook ads. You can target certain demographics or interest groups to make sure you are driving targeted traffic to your opt-in. Adding an opt-in form on a Facebook fan page can be a very effective way of building a targeted list.

You can also post in forums related to your business or products and have a link in your signature that has an opt-in form to your mailing list. If you provide the forum members with helpful advice and interesting posts, some of them will click on your link and join your list.

4. Build a relationship with your list by providing them with interesting content and value. Some people make the mistake of only sending their lists offers. Every email is telling people to buy, buy, buy. Most people tend to get tired of being sold to all of the time, and if you send too many promotional emails you will see a high number of individuals opt out of your list.

Try to balance your emails between offering good, informative content and sending offers every third email or so. That way you still can send plenty of offers, but not to the point where your readers think that all you want to do is sell them things all of the time.

5. Use automation

This may be the most important of all of our list building tips. It is critical that you use a quality autoresponder service to automate the list building process. The service will opt people in to and out of your list, allow you to queue up messages and send them on a schedule, send broadcast messages, comply with spam policies and much more.
